In September 2015, sixteen Simcoe County artists were inspired to initiate a Reconciliation Art Project. They came together to learn from each other, share stories, gain understanding and collaborate on a linked series of artworks.
The project is titled Call to Action #83 Simcoe County after the Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission: “A strategy for Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists to undertake collaborative projects and produce works that contribute to the reconciliation process.”
Now in the process of Round 4, it continues to keep dialogue open between indigenous and non-Indigenous people of Simcoe County and beyond.
Awi-niigaani-wiiji-mino-inawendiwin, is an Anishinaanemowin (Ojibway) song composed by Marilyn George who is a fabulous singer and drummer, presently living in Midland, Ontario, originally from Genaabaajiing (Serpent River), First Nation. Asked to create a song that would embody Call to Action # 83 Simcoe County she carries the song. In order to sing it one requires her permission. She sings it in public when she performs and when she is present at unveilings of the Rounds.
