Biography
Marilyn George is Ojibway from Serpent River First Nation, born and raised. Leaving home at the age of 17, George went to Sault College pursuing avenues of education and personal growth.
“I’ve worked in several venues and native organizations throughout Ontario. As an aboriginal artisan, I spend a lot of time teaching and spreading knowledge about native culture. My personal handwork includes beads, leather, porcupine quills, caribou hair and birch bark. These natural media inspire me. I am also an aboriginal drummer and singer.”
Statement
Ahnee Boozho (Hello)
Jennie’s work inspired me to imagine my people back and thriving. This family was returned by the Eagle to a wonderful apple tree. There are no threats nearby. The tree is shinning with energy and goodness. This family is in right relationship with all of creation. There is a feeling of peace (absence of fear).
I chose the metallic shinning yellow and red acrylics to emphasis the beauty of family’s Spirit and how their Spirit connects with the Spirit of the Tree who supports and protects them now. Resilience and love have kept my people alive against all odds. The roots of the Tree are red with life and love. The Eagle kept us safe in His waters in Round 1. Now the Eagle has brought us home to flourish. Like this Tree, we are strong, ancient, and connected to all of Creation in Balance. The Tree, the Earth, the Sky. the Grass, the clean Air…they sustain us and we take care of them in return.
