Statement

I had only a few photos of this beautiful new family as a starting point for this painting. But I distinctly recalled the dark and dramatic piece that Mercedes had created for the last series of works that our group produced. I wanted to create a backdrop that symbolized our dark and shameful history.

Interestingly, what was intended as an entirely abstract surface began to take on the physical outline of a map of Canada. I incorporated some of the troubling statements I had read from TRC Chair Murray Sinclair, who describes the process of reconciliation as mountainous. I remain hopeful however, that with new life and new beginnings, come opportunities to both reflect on our past and strive for a much better future.
